The Federal Government has commended Akwa Ibom State for taking the lead position among states in prison reforms in the country, by providing land for the construction of a new prison facility in the State.
The Minister of Interior, Lt Gen Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (rtd), gave the commendation in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Prison Reforms between the Federal Government and Akwa Ibom State Government.
Gen Dambazau said that Akwa Ibom State has shown great leadership by being the first state to take steps in implementing prison reforms as proposed by the Federal Government.
He appreciated Akwa Ibom State government’s gesture of providing 15 acres of land for the construction of a prison that would accommodate 1,000 inmates, alongside accommodation for 30 staff members, and assured the governor that the facility, when built, would be maximally utilized.
The Minister noted that Akwa Ibom State was in dire need of a new facility, as the 600-capacity prison in Uyo, built years back, now has 900 inmates, observing that a new facility was needed at this time.
Earlier, while welcoming the Minister of Interior, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel, thanked the Federal Government for its support, declaring that it was that support that galvanized him into coming up with the concept for the construction of a newfacility.
He said that the plan for the relocation of the prison was set in motion by the fact that its present location has become unsuitable, as it was now within the city centre, adding that the provision of accommodation for staff members would also ease the work of the officials.
The Governor explained that Akwa Ibom people are law-abiding and that accounted for the low number of inmates in the prison in the state.
He pledged to fully implement the MoU between the Federal Government and Akwa Ibom State, and called for Federal Government’s intervention in erosion control, as the state is immensely threatened by the menace.
