The Federal Government and the United Kingdom have signed three key agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation on migration management, border security, and economic development.
The agreements include a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Migration Partnership, a Statement of Intent on Cooperation on Organised Immigration Crime and Border Security, and a Statement of Intent on the Expansion of Business Visas for UK companies operating in Nigeria.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo signed two of the agreements on Wednesday and the third on Thursday while representing the federal government in the United Kingdom.
Speaking at the signing, Tunji-Ojo described the development as a significant step toward building a migration system that is safe, orderly, transparent, and mutually beneficial. He noted that the agreements reflect Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its national interests while meeting international obligations.
“This partnership underscores our shared determination to develop a migration framework that delivers real results. Our focus is on implementation, and within the next year, we aim to demonstrate measurable progress that can serve as a model for future bilateral cooperation,” he said.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s longstanding relationship with the UK, particularly its collaboration with the UK Home Office. He commended the commitment of the current administration toward strengthening international partnerships.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s position, Tunji-Ojo stated that the government remains resolute in protecting its citizens while ensuring that individuals who exploit legal migration pathways or engage in criminal activities are held accountable
On the expansion of business visas, the Minister described the agreement as a critical enabler of economic growth. He explained that improved visa access would facilitate trade, encourage investment, and support Nigeria’s ambition of building a trillion-dollar economy by removing barriers associated with irregular migration.
“I want to assure our partners that Nigeria is open to greater opportunities for growth and socio-economic development. We are committed to ensuring that these agreements translate into tangible benefits,” he added.
The UK Home Secretary, Rt. Hon. Shabana Mahmood described Nigeria as a leading partner in bilateral relations, noting that the country is the first to secure such a comprehensive and extensive agreement with the United Kingdom.
“We value this partnership greatly. There is a shared vision between our countries, and we look forward to the impact of this collaboration,” she said.
Also speaking, UK Trade Envoy Florence Eshalomi noted that the agreement on expanding business visas presents clear advantages for both nations. She described the strengthened partnership as a bold and necessary step toward fostering economic growth, particularly for Nigeria as Africa’s largest economy.
The agreements mark a new phase in Nigeria-UK relations, focused on enhancing security cooperation, improving migration governance, and unlocking greater economic opportunities for both countries.
