The Ministry of Interior and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG) have proposed the formation of a high-level working group to fast-track the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across agencies under the Ministry.
The proposal was made when the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, received Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed, Executive Chairman/CEO of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), in his office today in Abuja.
Speaking on the proposed collaboration, Dr. Tunji-Ojo underscored the alignment of Pi-CNG’s objectives with the Ministry’s extensive mandate, which includes oversight of 264 correctional centres, Civil Defence formations, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and over 4,000 kilometers of national borders.
He stressed the significant opportunities for integration, including vehicle conversions for security fleets, enhanced logistical support, and strengthened border operations. These measures, he noted, would promote cleaner and more affordable energy while improving operational efficiency and achieving substantial cost savings.
The Minister subsequently directed the immediate establishment of a structured working group.
According to the directive, the Ministry’s Director of Joint Services will lead the team, with full representation from all relevant agencies, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service, and other key departments. He also urged the Pi-CNG delegation to nominate representatives to serve on the joint working group.
In his remarks, Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed commended the Minister’s transformative efforts in delivering sustainable outcomes to Nigerians within a short period.
He outlined the key focus areas of the proposed collaboration to include:
- Fleet conversion and adoption of CNG across paramilitary agencies under the Ministry.
- Establishment of a credit facility to support vehicle conversions and enhance energy access for staff of the Ministry and its agencies.
- Training, capacity building, and development of technical competence.
Barr. Ahmed expressed optimism in the Ministry’s leadership and its commitment to promoting cleaner, renewable, and sustainable energy use in Nigeria.
